The confectionery and chocolate business of Gerardus Johannes Droste was founded and opened in Haarlem in the summer of 1863. Excited customers would be able to buy a cup of chocolate and other types of colourful candy. One of the most popular were the chocolate pastilles, which were officially named 'Pastilles Droste'. 

The first Droste chocolate factory opened its doors on 2nd August 1890. Since 1891, Droste have been able to allocate the complete chocolate process in their own factory. 

Since 1st January 1997 Droste has been under the ownership of Hosta. Since then sales at Droste have increased rapidly and Droste has become one of the biggest users of cocoa in Holland. Droste is available in more than 60 countries to date.
